Advertise Your Business for Sale: Tips for Starting a Logging Company

Written by Paul Kendall | Jan 09 2017

So you’re wondering how to start a logging company? It should come as no surprise that you’ll need to be the outdoorsy type to run a successful logging company. But there’s more to running a thriving logging business than just being an outdoors-lover.

You’ll have to know how to successfully advertise your business, hire and manage employees, acquire the correct logging machinery, find locations to start logging, and much more.

1. Acquire Basic Forestry Logging Equipment

Before you can even start doing business, you need to acquire the equipment necessary to do business in the first place. Start looking for a logging equipment sale or store that offers equipment like chainsaws, splitting wedges, axes, splitting mauls, maintenance tools (e.g., files for chainsaws, sharping tools), etc.

2. Determine If You Need Heavy Duty Timber Logging Equipment

Timber logging equipment that is heavier duty is a larger investment, but can drastically reduce the time and cost spent on labor. For example, a portable sawmill or log splitter can help you reduce the effort and time spent on splitting large batches of firewood or (in the case of a portable saw mill) make boards out of timber that you can sell.

Verify the type of logging work you want to do for your business before making an investment in heavier duty equipment. Logging equipment financing can help you make larger purchases if you are just starting out and don’t yet have the funds to purchase equipment on your own.

3. Purchase a Timber Delivering Vehicle

Once you have your timber, firewood, or boards chopped up, you’re going to need to deliver it to your customers. Depending on how you structure your business, leasing a truck can help you to provide an all-inclusive logging service for all of your clients.

If you can’t yet afford a truck, you can choose to hire a deliveryman to send your timber to customers. Alternatively, you could choose to have customers pick up their orders at your business location. The closer you get to owning your own vehicle (or at least leasing it), the more reliable and independent your business operations will be.

4. Get Access to a Woodlot

Ideally you want to own your own woodlot. For many new businesses, it’s not a feasible option. Your alternative is looking for other landowners who will rent a part of their land for your business. Craigslist and other local classifieds is a great place to find a local lot available for purchase or rent.

5. Scan the Classifieds for Fallen Trees

Looking online and in the local newspaper’s classifieds, you can find “fallen trees” advertised, often letting you keep the firewood as long as you properly take care of the tree and any remaining debris.

6. Repurpose the Wood into Planks and Firewood for Sale

After acquiring a source of wood, you can repurpose it into wooden boards/planks or firewood, depending on your target market or current demand in the marketplace.

7. Advertise Your Logging Business for Sale of Firewood, Plans, and More

Using the same way you found your woodlot and fallen trees, use Craigslist, online locations, and local newspapers to advertise your new business and the services that you provide. Offer your tree removal services to homeowners and businesses that need unwanted trees or tree limbs removed from their property.

There are many ways to get started with your logging company. It all boils down to the demand of your local market, the services you can specialize in, and the general availability of wood that you can repurpose into saleable products for your business.
