5 Equipment Essentials for a Medical Marijuana Business

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical Marijuana is the use of marijuana plant or the chemical extracts from the plant to treat certain medical conditions. The two main chemical extracts that are used medicinally are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (TCH) and cannabidiol (CBD).

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, “The term medical marijuana refers to using the whole unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat a disease or symptom.”

While the U.S Food and Drug Administration has not approved the marijuana plant as medicine, FDA has approved two medications, Marinol and Cesamet, that contain THC (a key chemical extract from marijuana plant) to treat nausea and improve appetite.

In states where medical marijuana is legal, doctors may prescribe medical marijuana to treat, including but not limited to, nausea associated with chemotherapy, improve appetite in people suffering from weight loss due to HIV, and seizure disorders. A lot of research is going on in this field and the medical use of marijuana continues to grow.

According to Forbes, “Medical marijuana sales are projected to grow from $4.7 billion in 2016 to $13.3 billion in 2020.” As research identifies and validates more and more medicinal uses, the sales of medical marijuana will continue to grow at a rapid pace. It is also projected that medical marijuana industry would create more jobs than manufacturing by 2020.

5 Equipment Essentials for a Medical Marijuana Business

If you are debating whether or not you should start a medical marijuana business, you first need to understand everything that goes into running a successful (and profitable) medical marijuana operation. You already know that you need a place to grow the marijuana, a way to grow and harvest it, and then need to get it to your customers.

But in order for that to happen, you need to have all the right supplies - no surprise there. Let's go over some of the essential items, marijuana grow equipment, and tools that you will need in order to successfully grow medical marijuana so that you have enough supply to sell to customers.

Marijuana Grow Tents

To clarify, when I talk about “grow tents” as part of your marijuana growing equipment, I’m not talking about the building your operation takes place in. These tents are designed to help improve the effective growing process for your medical marijuana. Grow tents are designed for indoor use and help you to control 3 major elements of marijuana growth: lighting, humidity, and temperature.

The grow tent does not allow any outside light into it nor does it allow the inside light out which helps maintain the temperature and humidity levels.

Grow tents come in various sizes and you can choose a size based on how many plants you want to grow per tent. The convenience of a grow tent is that you can pack up and move to a new location if you choose to very easily.

Medical Marijuana Grow Lights

After you’ve found a place to grow your medical marijuana, you’ll then want to start optimizing the growth of the marijuana. Grow lights are a piece of marijuana equipment that are necessary for controlling the rate of marijuana growth by simulating sunlight.

When it comes to grow lights, there are several options available – fluorescent lights, high intensity discharge lights, metal halide lights, high pressure sodium lights, and of course light emitting diode (LED) lights.

Every expert has their opinion on which type of lighting to use – it depends on the size of your grow area, you electrical limitations, and how much money you are willing to spend.

The latest trend has been to go with LED lighting. In fact, some LED grow lights are even more effective than sunlight and are a popular choice among medical marijuana businesses. They’re cheaper to purchase, lighter to hang, generate more light per KW consumed, and require less replacements than HID and fluorescent lighting.

Medical Marijuana Climate Control

Next up is finding a way to manipulate the climate of the growing environment. The right marijuana equipment can mitigate crop damage as a result of disease, rot, and poor crop quality.

Climate control equipment will manage temperature and humidity levels. Marijuana requires temperatures around ~20 degree Celsius and humidity around ~60% to generate higher, less damaged crop yields.

Electric Hygrometers and Dehumidifiers are good investments to measure and maintain humidity around the ideal level.

Monitor Marijuana Growth

Equipping your medical marijuana growth environment with the right testing and metering devices can improve the quality of your crop and the amount of your yields, so make sure you stock up on the right equipment. Crucial data points to look for are temperature, humidity, nutrient amounts, and CO2 levels to name a few.

You could use fans for temperature control and air circulation, electric hygrometer and dehumidifier for humidity control, fertilizers to provide the required nutrients, and CO2 injection as appropriate to maintain CO2 level.

Knowing whether or not these data points are higher or lower than what you intend can help you to take quick action against issues in the growing environment.

Medical Marijuana Extractor

Of course, no perfect marijuana yield will matter if you can’t properly extract it with a marijuana extractor. Common types of extracts include kief, dry sieve (dry sift), hash, butane hash oil (BHO), supercritical CO2 oil, rick simpson oil (RSO), rosin, and more. There are many more types of medical marijuana equipment available to increase your effectiveness at growing medical marijuana. Medical Marijuana Equipment Financing

As you can see, to run a successful and profitable medical marijuana business, you need grow tents, grow lights, climate control, test equipment, and marijuana extractors - all of this costs money.

If you’re thinking about starting up a medical marijuana business, you may need to get medical marijuana equipment financing to help cover the startup costs of the business.
